Through a series of practical, critical and creative educational activities, it allows students in the three cycles of primary school to discover and reflect upon what is at stake in urban agriculture. Urban Planning Master's Thesis on rooftop greening

Before beginning to work full-time with the Rooftop Garden Project, I wrote my Master's thesis for a degree in Urban Planning on municipal strategies to encourage rooftop greening ("Making Rooftops Bloom: Strategies for encouraging rooftop greening in Montreal).

Soilless culture has been developed very rapidly during the last fifteen years in mainland China. The area of soilless culture in China was around 0.1 ha in 1985, by 1995 China had 50 ha of soilless culture area and, there was about 815 ha of soilless culture at the end of 2001 (Jiang et al., 2001), which was an increase of over 16 times as compared with five years ago.

To many, the idea of organic hydroponics seems like an impossible contradiction. Hydroponics, the growing of plants in a medium other than soil, usually utilizes a chemically derived nutrient solution. Organic gardeners, as a rule, do no like hydroponics: for those who love the soil, the prospect of plunging elbow-deep into a gritty mix of parlite and vermiculite is not very inspiring. Nor is brewing up a batch of Hy-pon-ex or Miracle-gro. How-ever, as an enterprising group of urban gardeners in Montreal has discovered hydroponic food production need not rely upon a chemical nutrient solution ... and, under the unique conditions of rooftop farming in the city, soilless vegetable cultivation has distinct advantages.

Student Initiative: Inspired By Rooftop Garden Project

I got the idea for this project during the Easter break when I was home in Granby. I was walking through the family’s health food store when I saw organic seeds for edible flowers and vegetables. I thought that it was quite a good idea and decided to bring some back to Montreal with me. My best friend on Vancouver Island has a green house and grows fresh fruits and vegetables all year around. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to do so in Montreal where there is barely any space available. I suddenly remembered seeing a presentation in class about rooftop gardening, and I asked myself why anyone should “travel thousands of miles [to get what they] could [...] produce within a 50-mile radius�? (Norberg-Hodge, Helena, 1996, p. 428). I went online and saw the website of “Our edible garden,�? and, thinking it was a brilliant idea, I decided to base my taking action project on this amazing initiative. I found the website helpful and easy to follow, as they provided a clear and concise guide on how to create your own rooftop garden.
